10 Things You Need to Do in DC

{By Ellery Sadler}

Ok, if you get the chance to visit our nation’s capitol there are a couple things you absolutely must do. Since my sister, Hailey, has been working on the Hill, I’ve had the chance to explore this amazing city. So here are ten things you should do in DC.

1. Museums. Walk 4 miles in uncomfortable shoes to visit the museums. Just kidding, try to bring comfortable shoes and maybe see how far it is before you start walking there in 100 degree weather. My favorite museum is probably the American History Museum, but the Nature History Museum is also incredible. And since these are free, they are always a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.

2. Eat at We The Pizza. Y’all the pizza here is incredible! And Spike Mendelsohn is a really cool person. Big, juicy, fabulous slices of pizza – you really should not miss this place.

3. Wander the conservatory. The orchid room is breathtaking! And its especially fun to go in the wintertime, when its snowing outside but it feels like and looks like Florida inside.

4. Go to Georgetown. The shops and restaurants here are fantastic. Totally worth your time.

5. Just Drive. Ok, this was kind of an accident in my own personal experience, it was more along the lines of getting lost … but it is really fun just to drive around and look at the old houses and cool statues and monuments, so whether or not you know where you are going, driving through DC can be really fun. (And if you meet your long lost love along the way … well, that’s even cooler.)

6. Avoid getting stopped by crazy people. This has happened on several occasions, whether its the middle aged man staring a little too long as you pass by, the hippie wearing three pink skirts and carrying a parasol or the woman who is sure you are her personal enemy even though you’ve never seen her before … well, just try to avoid the crazy people.

7. Stop and Stare. Not at people (though that is fun too sometimes), I mean just soak up the beauty and power of this place. And tour the Capitol if you have a chance, it is really a wonderful experience.

8. Eat at Ted’s Bulletin. This place has the world’s best homemade pop tarts, y’all. I can’t even tell you how good they are. You’ll just have to go and find out for yourself.

9. Listen to a band play on the Capitol steps. This is the coolest thing! In the summertime, you can head out in the evenings and just listen for free. It is really wonderful to get to sing The Star Spangled Banner on the steps of the Capitol.

10. Enjoy! And be grateful. Don’t rush, don’t be one of those crazy people or crazy tourists, just relax and experience the incredible beauty of our nation’s capitol.
